CHOOSING THE CORRECT MATH LEVEL
Choosing
the correct level of math for a child is sometimes a very difficult
decision. The math teachers at Ramsey have found that students who are
successful have many of the same qualities. These students are not only
talented in math, but are committed to doing assignments every day,
learning to study for tests and quizzes, showing detailed work on their
papers, and seeking help if they become confused about a concept. Next
year Ramsey will use standardized test scores to determine the math
level for your child.
Below are the different classes
offered to Ramsey 7th graders:
A student who is not good with
fractions or has not been exposed to positive and negative numbers, as
well as ratio, proportion and percent, and whose standardized test
scores are below 70% should enroll in CMP 2.
A student who
enrolls in CMP 2 CHALLENGE must be proficient with fractions, decimals,
and basic math facts. Also, the student should have been exposed to
basic geometry as well as ratio, proportion and percent and have
standardized test scores between 70% and 85%.
A student who
enrolls in CMP 3 CHALLENGE should have standardized test scores above
85%, completed the CMP2 challenge books, or a formal Pre-Algebra class
that has covered the following topics: 1) Use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to simplify algebraic expressions and to solve equations. 2) Proficient in the use of positive and negative numbers. 3) Proficient with fractions and decimals. 4) Graphing equations and inequalities. 5) Ratio, proportions, and percent problems. 6) Number theory (prime numbers, greatest common factors, least common multiples etc.). 7) Geometry
A
7th grader who enrolls in CMP3 Challenge will take IM2 Challenge in 8th
grade. This course has many high school performance packages to
complete. Therefore, 2nd semester of the 8th grade year, each student
in IM2 Challenge will be required to take two hours of math to complete
the required work. This means the student will have one less elective
that semester.
