AVID
is a program to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility and success.  It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.

AVID targets students in the academic middle — B, C, and even D students — who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.  These are students who are capable of completing a rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families.

AVID students are enrolled in Ramsey's toughest classes and in the AVID elective.  For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.  They improve their  self-image and become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

group of students, and it works for them because it:
  • accelerates underachieving students into more rigorous courses, instead of consigning them to dead-end remedial programs.
  • offers the intensive support students need to succeed in rigorous courses.
  • uses Socratic methods and study groups that specifically target the needs of under-achieving students.
  • is a schoolwide initiative, not a school within a school.

Thank you to the parents of our AVID students.  We are off to a great start! The students have been working on their AVID skills in Cornell Notes, Time Management and Organization.  We are seeing some results!

The Ramsey AVID students are lucky to have six (6) tutors from Macalester College.  Each tutor is trained in AVID.  We want to thank them for their help with our students! They will be with us at least once per week.

We would like to start an email directory of AVID Parents.  Please send an email to Mr.Tiede (james.tiede@spps.org) with “AVID Parent of (student’s name)” in the subject box if you want us to contact you via email.
