The Diaphragm
diaphragm
We hear people say, "Breathe from your diaphragm" all the time.  But what is the diaphragm and what does it do?
The diaphragm is a dome shaped muscular structure just below the lungs.  When you breathe in, the diaphragm get smaller, or contracts, so your lungs have the room to fill up.  When you breathe out, the diaphragm gets bigger, or expands, forcing the air out of your lungs. So, if you are breathing, you are breathing from your diaphragm.

We learn to focus on the diaphragm because it helps us takes more relaxed, fuller breathes.  When we breathe this way, our voice comes out clearer and louder.  We call this "vocal projection."  If we want our audience to hear us, we project our voice.
