Semester 1 Earth Science ( regular 8th grade students) Begins with a general section on studying science (Scientific Method, Metric System, graphing, etc.) This is followed by Matter and its Changes, a study of Rocks, the rock cycle and layering. The previous investigations will be related to our uncerstanding of geologic history and geologic time. Earth's internal Processes including earthquakes, volcanoes and oceans. Inquiry 9 (Challenge) Begins with a general section on studying science (Scientific Method, Metric System, graphing, etc.) This is followed by Chemistry and an investigation of Matter. This includes Atoms, Elements, Compounds and Mixtures, the Periodic Table, and Chemical Bonding. Semester 2 Earth Science will study the Universe, galaxies, stars and our own star, the sun. We will then go to our Solar System. lastly we will study our atmosphere and the weather. Physics , where we will investigate Motion and Energy, Forces in Motion, Forces in Fluids,the concept of Work, Machines and Energy. We will also cover Electricity and Waves. Physical Science explorations are hands-on lab centered investigations. The end of the year students will be working on self-directed projects.
