Welcome to Ms. Fiedler's Life Science Classes!
Beaker
We are looking forward to kicking off another school year in style! After going over the mandatory expectations and safety lessons we are going to learn how to do our very own experiments. By the end of the first trimester every student at Ramsey will be expected to write a lab report on their individual experiment.

Our second unit will cover how scientists classify organisms and why in the world they use that crazy language - Latin! The project for this unit will get us outside and will have us classifying the trees around our school and homes.

Expectations
The following expectations will be/have been discussed with students at the beginning of the school year. Periodically throughout the school year we will review expectations, but all students are expected to follow these guidelines for appropriate student behavior at all times. In addition to school rules our classroom expectations are as follows:

- Be on time to class (that means students being in their seats when the bell rings)
- Listen when the teacher or classmates are speaking
- Stay in your seat during class (i.e. no wandering around to see friends)
- Bring something to write with to class (Ms. Fiedler doesn't want to support the pencil industry all by herself).

Contact Information
Should you have any questions or comments about what we are doing in class throughout the year please feel free to contact Ms. Fiedler with your concerns.

We can always use a few volunteers to help out with things such as labs, field trips, and helping arrange guest speakers. If any family or friends of students would like to help or know of people that the science department should contact that information is greatly appreciated.

The best way to get in touch is via email at jessica.fiedler@spps.org.  You can also call Ms. Fiedler at Ramsey before or after the school day. The phone number at Ramsey is (651)293-8860.

About Ms. Fiedler
All About Ms. Fiedler....
Education
Ms. Fiedler attended the University of Minnesota here in the Twin Cities for Nutrition Science and Biology with a minor in Spanish. After a year away from the University she returned to begin a Master's program in Science Education.

Interests
Before starting graduate school Ms. Fiedler took a year off and planned to move to Colorado. Somehow she found herself in the Andes Mountains of South America instead. Her 6 1/2 months in South America inspired a new hobby of researching and planning trips abroad. This includes finding volunteer opportunities, planning travel routes, and learning local languages. During the summer of 2006 she canoed the Mississippi River from the headwaters at Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico. The trip covered 2,300 miles, took 72 days! Along the way she helped team "Kanoeing for Katrina" in an effort to raise money to refurbish and purchase musical instruments for students. Summer 2008 included a hike across England along Hadrian's Wall, built in the second century. In 2009 Ms. Fiedler participated in a teaching internship in Thailand to help complete requirements for her master's degree. She followed that up with a trip to East Africa where she learned about some amazing wildlife and geography first hand.

Volunteering
Past volunteering abroad experiences include rehabilitating monkeys in Bolivia, teaching English and volleyball in Brasil, and working for a Humane Society in Puerto Rico.

Good question... Any ideas?
