Corey Needleman is proud to be a member of the Ramsey Jr. High music faculty! Corey is starting his third year at Ramsey and has taught instrumental music at the Jr. High level for the past nine years. He is also a director with the Minnesota Institute for Talented Youth Jazz program housed at Macalaster College. Corey has written curriculum for the American Composers Forum for a music literacy initiative entitled, St. Paul Listen's and also to accompany a piece entitled, Alegre, written by acclaimed New York composer Tania Léon as part of the ACF's Band Quest initiative – a project linking professional, contemporary composers with middle level band. Mr. Needleman's professional affiliations include: Music Educators National Confrence / Minnesota Music Educators Assoc., Minnesota Band Directors Association, American String Teachers Association / Minnesota String and Orchestra Teachers Assoc., ASCAP, and The Percussive Arts Society. Before coming to Ramsey, Corey taught at Capitol Hill Gifted and Talented Magnet School in St. Paul and in Minneapolis Public Schools. In addition to his teaching endeavors, Corey is an active professional drummer and percussionist performing frequently throughout the Twin Cities. Corey has a wonderful family with a beautiful and supportive wife, two wonderful children (the Needlekids), a rascal dog and a haughty cat. He enjoys reading, carpentry, photography (film and digital), playing clarinet, and as an Eagle Scout should, he loves camping, backpacking, hiking and spending time in the woods. Corey studied music at the University of Minnesota earning Bachelors of Music in Education degree. Additionally, he has completed the Jazz at Lincoln Center, Essentially Ellington Band Director Academy in Aspen, CO. Corey is delighted to be teaching at Ramsey, where he can nourish his passions for teaching this age group and to provide a meaningful, high-quality performance education for developing young musicians. He believes educating the heart is equally important to educating the mind.
