| Judi Mikolai | | I am excited to be a member of the Ramsey Junior High staff! I am back for my second year teaching reading. The previous six years I taught middle and high school German elsewhere, but am really enjoying both teaching reading and the Ramsey students!
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of MN, Morris in Biology and German, my Secondary Schools teaching certification and Master of Arts in Education from the University of St. Thomas, and my K-12 Reading certification from Hamline University.
My husband, Jon, our two teenage children, Olivia and Isaak, our cat, Bluie, and I live in New Brighton. My two attend Irondale High School. We spend much of our free time out-of-doors -- we like to camp, canoe, and cross-country ski. In addition, I like to garden, bake, read and bike.

READING CLASSES We would like to see all students reading at their grade level or higher. In fact, our district goal is to raise reading scores a full ten percentage points this year. Ramsey students who read below grade level have one of two reading research-based classes in addition to their language arts class.
In the reading class called AMP, Achieving Maximum Potential, we mainly read non-fiction in this program that focuses on 1) vocabulary - hard, commonly-used words 2) comprehension - seven strategies to enhance understanding, and 3) test-taking skills - the tests are designed to improve students' test-taking abilities.
In the Reading Strategies class we read fiction and non-fiction in this program called Read 180 that focuses on 1) word skills - computer -based exercises to improve comprehension, spelling and use of vocabulary. 2) writing skills - working with the teacher in a small group of students to improve writing and 3) reading skills - individual silent reading using high interest, books at the right level and class time to practice reading.
